Hi everyone. I like study groups especially before a test, so if anyone is planning on forming one I would be interested. Are there no "turn-in" assignments for this class? I have read that there are just tests, but I wanted to be completely sure. Thank you

Dave Balogh said...

Good idea on the study groups.
There are no turn in assignments, just 3 tests taken at the Proctoring Center at the Aptos Campus.

Hi, so in terms of announcments/updates, should we check this blog or should we check your Cabrillo Website?

Dave Balogh said...

It would be best to check here. Important communications will be by email (Like when you start taking tests & need to get the results)

This sounds great. I'm also up for study groups before tests. Please feel free to include me in anything that gets organized.
Thanks

If we are on the waitlist, do we need to get an add card to enroll in the class? Web advisor will not let me enroll online.

Hi:

1. If you need to add the class email

onlineregister@cabrillo.edu

& give them your name, student ID#,and the section # of the class & tell them I o.K.'d the add.

2. There are no specified dates for the exams. Make an appointment whenever you are ready, but you must finish all three tests by the end of the semester. The last Friday of classes, not finals.

3. The lectures are on one set of downloads and the animations are on the other. The lecture numbers match the animations. Download all of the material provided. You can only see the Met1Distance files if you log on to iTunes. The lectures are in the open for all to see.

I would also love to do a study group. But I'm trying to do the work for this class at a faster pace, so as to try and finish in about 10 Weeks rather than the prescribed 16. That means doing about 3-4 lectures a week with each test happening probably in mid-March, mid-April, and the final test sometime in May.

Is anyone else working at this speed? and if so would you like to organize a study group to meet earlier on for the tests than the main study group might be doing? The advantage of this is doing the work quickly but efficiently and finishing this class earlier so that your workload for finals might be lightened up a bit. Let me know if anyone else is interested in doing this. my e-mail is johntsylv@gmail.com

Question for Mr. Balogh:

There seems to be some missing classes and differentiation between the Meteorology 1 Public Videos and the Meteorology 1 Distance Ed. Public Videos.

Lectures #13 and #23 are missing from both collections and the Distance Ed. collection includes two extra videos, one for Hurricane Katrina and a second Tornados video at the end.

Can you please clarify which we should go by? Thanks. - John

Hey. I am also interested in getting together for s study session so maybe we post when planning to take the first exam and also days that we are availble so we can try to organize something. I heard in the first lecture something about be able to bring in a 3x5 cheat sheet card does that also apply for the online class? Thanks:)

Love the idea of study groups. Would anyone be interested in doing study groups over skype? As I am living in London at the moment. If you are my email is ginam1120@gmail.com. I am also getting the order of the lectures confused. Are they in order as they are listed on the itunes screen? And what are the numbers in order with next to the subject title? Thanks

Gabriel Cassaro said...

hello Mr. Balogh

how do we get an study guide and a practice test?

Thank you

Dave Balogh said...

Hi:

"Lecture" # 13 and 23 are test dates for the in class students. There are no #13 and 23 lectures. I had to keep the numbers so that both distance and in class students could use iTunes U and not be confused.

Yes, all students can bring a 3X5 inch card (two sides) with notes in their own handwriting to each test.

Study and Practice tests are on the Meteorology (only) web page in the yellow area on the left side of the page. Go to the home page, select Meteorology and you'll be there.

Where will we be able to check our grades after we take the first exam?

Anonymous said...

Just two quick comments . . .

- Is anyone else bothered by the constant static that happens on every video from the microphone? I'll be listening to the classes on my headphones and get barraged with sharp static, sometimes during important parts of the lecture! This was especially apparent on lecture #19. Might be something to check out on your next set of recordings Mr. Balogh.

- And on a high note, I can't believe barely any one in the class was laughing at your Raindrop story on lecture 20. I was cracking up, hilarious New York accent.

Maya Burke said...

i definitely have to agree. the static is kind of annoying.

Is there a way for us to get our exams back so we can see what we got wrong and what the correct answer is. That would be helpful to get a better understanding and learning experience of meterology from this online course. Every other online course I've taken offers that and it really helps a lot. Thank you!

Dave Balogh said...

Angela and everyone else:

I am available in my office 11-12 Monday - Thursday for anyone who wants to go over their exams. Please drop in- no appointment necessary.

John & Maya:

Sorry about the static.I'll look into the problem and try to fix it.

Maya Burke said...

Hello Mr. Balogh, I know you already said you were going to work on the static on the lectures, but I was just trying to watch lecture #28 on lightening and the static is so bad that I only got about 4 and half minutes into it, it was really difficult to understand what was being said.

Dave Balogh said...

Hi:
I will listen to the original recording & see if I can fix it.

Sorry,

Maya Burke said...

Thank You!

Dave Balogh said...

The static on Lecture 28 only lasts for the first 9 minutes. I will need to work on it over the summer to do a voice over for that start of the class. I have no idea what happened or why it starts out fine, goes bad, then is ok again unless there was some sort of interference from electronics in the building.

I know what you're talking about.

1. go to cabrillo.edu homepage
2. click on the A-Z index link
3. go to 'M'
4. scroll down to Meteorolgy and click on it.
5. now you're on the 'web-site'
6. scroll down about an inch and a half, and in the center of the page, you'll see 4 links (2 purple, 2 green)

The purple links are what you took to access the Orientation, right?

So, the green "meteorolgy" will give you 'web site'

Don't forget to 'bookmark' this too!!

Juliet said...

Also Brenna,

If you click on the itunes university link and select lecture one, Prof Balogh talks about how to get to the website.

i would just like to know just exactly which class lectures we download. there are two different classes such as distance learning and elementary meteo. which one do i go to. thanks

Juliet said...

Jake,

I'm a little confused at your question. right now, it's 5:31 on 9/5. I'll be home all night, moonlighting with meteorogy.

You're welcome to call 621-7932. Sometimes, it's easier to clarify over the phone.

Juliet said...

Jake, I think you might find your answer in the blog!
Go to the FEBRUARY 12, 2009 4:31 PM blog from Balogh.

He's responding to Feb. 11 blog, which was asking a question similar to yours.

Hi Prof Balogh,

I have signed up for my first test at the procturing center wed. sept. 9th.

I started the class mid august. But, I don't know if I am actually prepared enough.

Question: The pretests, so the first exam will reflect information on just Chapter 1 pretest or Chapters 1 and 2 pretests?

Looks like 1 and 2.

What about 'The Seasons' pretest? Will this be in the first exam as well?

Please advise!

All classmates,

Does anybody from fall 2009 OL meteorology class know where i can find the assignments for this class, if there is any, or is the only thing that gets turned in our are tests when we go to take them? can someone please help me and answer my questions.

Thanks Sammy

Juliet said...

Hi Sammy,

If you're in the blog, scroll all the way down. Then count 11 or 12 blogs up.

You'll see Brenna's question. Then I answer it in the next blog (Juliet Aug. 2).

That answer will help you pull up the syllabus, and see the meteorology website!!

Bye! Juliet

Jake: You use both downloads. The lecture and the "Distance Learning"
specials. The latter are audio visual materials which I could not record during the lectures. Note that the numbering of the audiovisual materials match the lectures, so that you can watch the audio visual material at the same day that you see the lectures.

Sammy:
The only gradable assignments are the three tests. Look at the Course Outline to see when to take the tests as it clearly tells you which lectures go with which exam.

Anonymous said...

I recently started reading the material for exam one, I was wondering if the practice exams are similar to the actual exams?

Janet said...

Any one know how many questions the exam has?

Dave Balogh said...

I have just switched over to Blackboard for this class. It is very clear and now you can take the tests on line instead of taking the time to come to the Proctoring Center at Cabrillo. Everyone should go to the blackboard sign in (link from the Cabrillo Home Page look for distance learning.

There are 100 points for each exam.
some questions are worth more than one point so the number of questions vary.

Everyone should be looking at the lectures on iTunes U since most of the questions come from the lecture material.

I do use some of the questions from the pre-tests on exams.

Brenna Henry said...

Hi Dave,
For the tenth edition lecture course outline i didn't see any reading assignments for lecture #9-10 Outgoing Radiation. Is that correct or is there something missing? thanks, Brenna

Dave Balogh said...

Lectures 8,-10 have the same reading assignment.
